HISTORY OF SUN TEMPLE KONARK 


 Sun temple was built by the king Narasimhadeva I of the Ganga empire. referred to as the simplest ruler of the dynasty, he built this temple on the occasion of winning over the battle with the muslims. With the craftsmanship of 1200 artisans being selected by himself personally from everywhere the state , the inspiration for this temple was laid in 1243 A.D. and was completed by 1255 A.D. (a complete span of 12 years).The temple was built on the shore of the temple. 
During these 12 years the artisans were adhered to the strict practice of celibacy and were prohibited from wine, meat and fish. All of them built the temple with great devotion and concentration. With the good leadership of Narasimhadeva I, all were contented with the regulations.
ABOUT TEMPLE OF KONARK

  • built in 13th century within the honor of the sun-god Surya is currently under ruins. the whole temple was designed within the shape of a huge chariot with 
  • 24 wheels about three meters ( or) 10 feet in diameter high24 wheels. These wheels represent the 24 hours of the day 
  • 7 horses pulling this chariot which represent the seven days of the week. Some people even say that these 7 horses represent the 7 colors of the daylight (violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red). Some even mention that these represent the 7 chakras of the human (muladhara, swadhisthana, manipura, anahata, vishuddha, agna and sahasrara). For a touch more info, the 7 horses of the Surya are Gayathri, Bruhathi, Ushnik, Jagathi, Dhrushtup, Anushtup and Bhakthi.urya the sun god, Surya, across the heavens. Surya has been a well-liked deity in India since the Vedic period.

  • On the western side of the temple lies the sanctuary tower which are now nothing but just a clutter of varied sandstone slabs which are kept one over another. This impressive construction is believed to possess a pyramidal roof commonly referred to as jaganmohan.
  • The roof of jagamohana features a roof that has around 3 tiers and lots of statutes are placed over them. 
  • The statutes are either of dancers or the musicians. The platform at the bottom also features a sculpture of Lord Shiva as Nataraja and performing the dance. the inside of the terrace is now-a-days barren up.
  • The stairs that takes you up towards the Statute of Surya is found beyond the terrace. The statute of the Sun god is carved out an enormous green colored chlorite stone. it's alleged to be the foremost beautiful work of art present in Konark.
